Footnote NZ Dance x Kota Yamazaki『Thin Paper, Autonomu pf Synapse, Nomads  Tokyo[-ing]』

“My motive, my sense of touch, has less energy than surface tension.”
The thin, invisible paper that adheres to my skin as I breathe uses all my nerves to urge me to give instructions.
Is it a will that is me or a will that is not me?
It may just be walking, and there is a whimsical freedom that allows you to laugh.
“The wind from the gap in the window…”
 “Maybe it’s blowing something”
 “Has anyone come?”
“Then it asks performers, ‘What is your existence?’ “

 —Kota Yamazaki

New Zealand has a national dance school, and the employment rate in contemporary dance for students who pass through its narrow gates is over 90%. Contemporary dance seems to blend in their life naturally. Although its dance culture has not been yet well known outside the country, their exciting new trend and energy in dance is rapidly growing internationally. The Maori people make up 15% of the population, and they are characterized by their integration and coexistence. Together with them, we will develop a new dance language via Tokyo that speaks to the world.
This new work, Thin Paper, Autonomy of Synapse, Nomads and Tokyo[-ing], was developed based on their previously collaborated work, Fog, Nerves, Future, Ocean, Hello (echoes). The previous collaboration started by the invitation of Footnote NZ Dance to Yamazaki, and the work toured 8 cities in New Zealand in 2020. Video screening of the work also happened as part of YPAM Fringe Program in 2021 in Japan (organized by Hiwood, co-organized by Dance Base Yokohama).
Excitingly, Yamazaki himself will perform in the performances in Japan of this new work, revealing his own schizophrenic brain processes as if to clarify them to audiences.
After a Japan tour, Thin Paper, Autonomy of Synapse, Nomads and Tokyo[-ing] will be performed at Tempo Dance Festival in Auckland, followed by tours in New Zealand and in the United States in the 2025-26 season.

Truly neurotic in nature, Kota Yamazaki’s piece creates an organic universe where you traverse from edge to edge of the tip of a cliff overlooking a stormy ocean. Where the comparison between the earth's natural elements and our own neurological thoughts start to bind. Sitting with becoming without becoming, noticing how engagement acts in silence of the witness. Yamazaki holds you with its confidence in time. Self-aware placing you in a safe cauldron of oblivion. From heavy dense and impactful shaking to water like arabesques, Yamazaki’s decision making is seamless. Yamazaki’s use of voice leads us into the behaviour of our dancers on stage and creates a tunnel into their world, effective in making the individual seated audience member really feel their own flesh.
